Workshop: The Breathing Mechanism
Scholars of medicine and the human body have long debated the voluntary or involuntary role of the diaphragm, whether in the process of natural breathing or of breathing in the context of instrumental performance. In this workshop Philippe Schartz, principal trumpet of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, shares his views on the great ‘air’ debate, supported by unique scientific evidence.
Though rooted in the science of performance, the application of breathing techniques discussed in this session will be appropriate to wind and brass players of all ages and abilities.
