Arcomis exists to support new music and composers, and both will play an important part in the Brass Event.
Arcomis has commissioned 10 composers with funds provided by the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Government to each write a short fanfare for the Arcomis International Brass Event 2013. These will permeate the festival in the form of announcing the beginning of our major concerts and where applicable their second halves.
We are delighted to have commissioned:
The Arcomis Brass Quintet will perform the fanfares and the musicians will surround the audience in communal areas of St David's Hall and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, or in the concert halls themselves. This approach forms part of a specific vein through the festival that allows people to directly experience new music without boundaries through these unexpected and exciting short bursts that celebrate the diversity represented in the wealth of compositional talent in the UK.
Another exciting aspect of this garland is that the new works will, in some way of the composers’ choosing, engage with any of the five chosen anniversary composers of 2013: Britten, Lutoslawski, Hindemith, Poulenc or Berio.
The project is also being commissioned as part of Arcomis Publishing, which exists to make access to new music scores affordable to as wide a variety of performers as possible. Arcomis have been given permission to publish these short fanfares as a standalone collection that will be available for download from Arcomis Publishing for a very affordable price.
